What's a Hackathon?

A hackathon is a coding event in which teams “hack” together to create an awesome project like a game, website, or app! Hackathons are a great way to learn more about coding, meet new people, and build something cool. Check out "What is a hackathon" by Dave Fontenot to learn more.

How long is Hack River Dell '16?

The event has a 12-hour runtime in which teams can work on their hacks, and that will run from 9 AM to 9 PM. Keep in mind that there is also and opening and closing ceremony before and after the event. Check in begins at 7:00 AM, and the closing ceremony will end around 9:45 PM. We know that 12 hours is daunting, but staying the full 12 hours is worth it! For the full event schedule, please refer to the event schedule below.

Who can attend?

This event is open for all middle through high school students (Grades 7-12), no matter where they live or what school they attend.

What if I don't know how to code?

No problem! The purpose of a hackathon is to get everyone involved, and we especially encourage beginners to attend. Hackathons are a great place to come and learn programming for the first time. A great example of a hack that didn't require any code is Notis.

How do teams work?

At Hack River Dell, you can either come and hack on your own, or come with a team. Teams may consist of no more than 5 people per team. If you want to work with a team, but don’t have one, we can help you find one on the day of the event.

What can I win?

Every hacker who stays until the closing ceremony will have a chance to win the Xbox One and HP 2-in-1 Laptop raffle! Hackers who sign up before November 12th will have two tickets in the Xbox raffle, while those who register after 11/12 will receive one ticket. The raffle prizes will be won by one single participant. There are also grand prizes for each of the members of the top three selected teams. There will be mini challenges throughout the day to win smaller prizes, but in order to be eligible for the top 3 grand prizes your team must stay until the end of the closing ceremony.

What should I bring?

You need to bring a laptop or desktop computer, school ID, phone, charging cables, powerstrips, and any hardware you plan on using. If you don't have a computer to use, we'll have a limited amount of laptops you can borrow for the event. Also, do not forget to bring the signed waiver, this will be emailed to you if you register.

When can I start my hack?

Hacking begins after the opening ceremony at 9 AM in order to qualify for judging. Anyone who starts their hack before 9 AM will be disqualified.

How much does it cost to attend?

Nothing! Hack River Dell it totally free! There is no fee to attend and participate at the event. Even food and merchandise will be provided free of charge.

How and when do I submit my hack?

Submissions begin at 8:30 PM promptly, and are open until 9:00 PM. You can, however, continue to work on your presentation or your hack after 9:00 PM. We will send out instructions on how to submit your hack at least 3 hours before submission time.

What do I need for the expo?

You should have some sort of demonstration of your hack during the expo (e.g. PowerPoint presentation, hands-on demo, or whatever is applicable for your hack).

I have a different question and/or suggestion
